Moisei commune is located in the south-eastern part of Maramureș county, 136 km from Baia Mare, 5 km from Borșa and 7 km from the town of Vișeu de Sus. It is crossed by two main arteries, DN17 and DN18.

The commune of Moisei is located in the Maramureșului Depression, on the Vișeu valley, the Vișeu river, crossing Moiseiul, to the west, at the foot of the Rodnei Mountains, with Pietrosu, to the south, and the Maramureșului Mountains to the north. Also here, Izvorul lui Dragoș and Izvorul Negru flow into the Vișeu river.
