Bistrita is located in the northeastern part of the Transylvanian Plateau, in the Bistrita Depression and is crossed by the Bistrita River. The main access road is the European road E58 (DN17) which connects Transylvania and Moldova. The municipality is located on flat ground, at an altitude of 356 m, on the coordinates 47 ° 10 'north latitude and 24 ° 30' east longitude. Bistrita is surrounded by hills covered with extensive orchards.
