The island has over 1,000 km of coastline with around 200 beaches. Inside, the relief is predominantly mountainous, with altitudes up to 2700 m with more than 20 peaks exceeding 2000 m. Together with Sardinia it is on the same continental micro-plate and it is separated by the Bonifacio Strait. The climate is Mediterranean, dry and warm, a little milder as the altitude increases.
Tourism plays an important role in the island's economy, attracting large numbers of tourists due to its pleasant climate and natural landscapes. As the island has not undergone intense development like other parts of the Mediterranean, it still retains a distinct appearance. Due to the insularity and relative underdevelopment, the island enjoys a relaxed tax regime, since the period of the French Revolution.
