Sibiu is the municipality of residence of the county of the same name, Transylvania, Romania, consisting of the component localities Păltiniș and Sibiu (residence). Sibiu is an important cultural and economic center in southern Transylvania.
The city of Sibiu has represented and still represents one of the most important and flourishing cities in Transylvania, being one of the main centers of the Saxon settlers established in the area. The city was the capital of the Principality of Transylvania between 1692-1791 and 1849-1865.
